Tell Governor Cooper: Veto HB 805 and Protect Free Speech & Assembly in North Carolina

In May 2021, NC House Speaker Tim Moore unleashed House Bill 805, a bill that would stifle free speech, discourage peaceful protests, and impose harsh criminal penalties on people charged with the undefined term of “rioting.” This unnecessary legislation also requires a judge to set bail, all but guaranteeing that someone arrested at an afternoon protest will spend at least one night in jail before having an opportunity to go home.

Moore has already cited #BlackLivesMatter protests as his motivation for the bill, filed just 10 days after the police killing of Elizabeth City resident Andrew Brown, Jr., and it will almost certainly have a disparate impact on Black and other communities of color calling for racial justice. 

HB805 has just passed the North Carolina General Assembly despite mounting opposition from North Carolinians who know that essentially banning our lawful right to protest will diminish our First Amendment rights.

The time is now: Tell Governor Cooper that you oppose HB805 and he must veto North Carolina’s attack on free speech and assembly.
